A Sussex Stop on a Bigger Trip
This stop was part of a longer August vacation that took me through the UK and on to Istanbul, and the East Sussex National resort turned out to be the perfect quiet middle chapter. I drove in from Brighton, though the resort is also within easy reach of Gatwick Airport, a genuinely convenient location if you're combining a countryside stay with a UK arrival or departure.
What follows is a first-hand look at the hotel, the surrounding countryside, how to actually get there, and the two nearby towns worth knowing about — Uckfield and Lewes — for anyone planning a similar trip.
The Hotel & the Grounds
The hotel itself was one of the highlights of the stay. The team was consistently supportive throughout the visit, and the rooms were clean, spacious, and comfortable — the kind of space where you can genuinely unwind after a day of travel. But the real draw is what surrounds the hotel: rolling Sussex countryside, quiet woodland, and an on-site golf club that gives the whole resort a relaxed, green, open feel.
A Peaceful Retreat — With a Trade-Off
It's worth being upfront about what this resort is and isn't. There's no city nearby, and beyond the resort grounds and the golf club, there really isn't anywhere else to walk to. That's precisely what makes it so relaxing — but it also means this isn't the stop for travelers who want to wander into a town center each evening or grab dinner somewhere new every night. Plan on the resort itself being your world for the duration of the stay, with day trips out to nearby towns if you want a change of scenery.
A Popular Wedding Destination
The countryside setting clearly doesn't go unnoticed — while we were staying, we watched a beautiful wedding unfold on the grounds. It's easy to see why: the woodland backdrop and open green space give the resort a natural, photogenic setting that a lot of couples in the area choose for their big day. If you're visiting in summer, don't be surprised if a wedding party is sharing the grounds with you.
Getting There & Getting Around
Transport is the one area where this resort needs some planning. Public transport doesn't reach the hotel directly — the nearest train station is in Uckfield, the closest town to the resort — and most guests arrive by car. If you don't have a car, know this before you book:

By far the easiest option. We drove in from Brighton, and having a car gave complete flexibility for day trips to Lewes, Uckfield, and beyond.
Train + Taxi
The nearest station is in Uckfield. From there, you'll need a taxi or pre-arranged transfer to reach the resort — there's no direct public transport link.
Rideshare Apps
Ordering an Uber from the resort typically involves a long wait, given how rural the location is. It's usable, but not something to rely on for a quick pickup.
Local Taxi Services
Both Uckfield and Lewes have local taxi office services you can call directly — a more reliable option than waiting on a rideshare app in this area.
Nearby Towns Worth Knowing About
While the resort itself is intentionally removed from town life, two nearby towns are worth knowing about if you want a change of pace during your stay.
Uckfield — The Closest Town
Uckfield is the nearest town to the resort and home to the closest train station, making it the natural link point if you're arriving without a car or need a local taxi service.
Lewes — The Second Closest Town
Lewes is a short drive from the resort and well worth the trip, largely thanks to Lewes Castle. Construction began soon after the Norman Conquest of 1066, with work starting around 1067–1070 under William de Warenne, one of William the Conqueror's key allies. Walking through the town and up to the castle grounds makes for an easy, worthwhile half-day trip from the resort.
