About Macau

Macau is a small coastal territory on the Pearl River Delta, known for its dense skyline, major casino resorts, and preserved Portuguese-Chinese heritage districts. It is officially a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China under the “one country, two systems” framework, which gives it a high degree of autonomy in most internal matters.

Although Macau has its own immigration controls, currency, and legal system, it relies on a compact network of public and private hospitals and clinics for medical care, with more complex cases sometimes referred to nearby Hong Kong. Visitors generally do not face malaria risk, but should pay attention to food- and water-borne illness and mosquito-borne infections such as dengue, as well as standard vaccine-preventable diseases.
