Before You Travel to Andorra

Andorra is a tiny, landlocked microstate nestled in the Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain. It is one of Europe's safest and most welcoming destinations, known for its duty-free shopping, world-class skiing, and spectacular mountain scenery. Health risks for US travelers are minimal, but preparation is still recommended — particularly for mountain activities. Visit your physician at least 4–6 weeks before departure to confirm routine vaccinations are current.

Confirm Routine Vaccines

No special travel vaccines are required for Andorra. Confirm your routine immunizations are up to date with your physician — especially MMR, Tdap, and influenza.

Get Travel Insurance

Standard US health insurance does not cover care abroad. Travel health insurance is recommended, especially if participating in skiing, snowboarding, or other mountain sports where injury risk is elevated.

Entry Requirements

US citizens do not need a visa to enter Andorra. There is no airport in Andorra — entry is by road from Spain or France. A valid US passport is required. Enroll in STEP at step.state.gov for emergency alerts.

Altitude Awareness

Andorra la Vella sits at approximately 1,023 meters (3,356 ft) and ski resorts reach over 2,600 meters (8,530 ft). Travelers unaccustomed to altitude may experience mild symptoms. Acclimatize gradually and stay well hydrated.

Water & Food Safety

Tap water in Andorra is safe to drink and meets European standards. Food safety standards are high and comparable to Western Europe. No special food or water precautions are necessary for most travelers.

Currency & Payments

Andorra uses the Euro (EUR). Credit cards are widely accepted, including at medical facilities. ATMs are readily available in Andorra la Vella. Andorra is duty-free, making many goods cheaper than in neighboring countries.

Yellow Fever in Andorra

NOT REQUIRED — No Yellow Fever Risk: There is no yellow fever risk in Andorra, and no yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry. Andorra is located in temperate Europe, where the Aedes aegypti mosquito vector is not present.
Not Required No vaccination certificate needed for entry
No Risk Yellow fever is not present in Andorra
Temperate Climate Mosquito vectors for YF not present
Check Connecting Countries If transiting an endemic country, requirements may apply

Returning via a Yellow Fever Country?

If your trip includes travel through or to a yellow fever endemic country (such as parts of Africa or South America) before or after visiting Andorra, yellow fever vaccination may be required by those other countries and potentially required to re-enter the US if CDC surveillance is active. Consult your travel medicine physician about your full itinerary.

Doctor's Tip: Even though no yellow fever vaccine is required for Andorra, this is a good opportunity to review all your routine vaccines with your physician and ensure you are up to date before international travel.

Malaria in Andorra

NO MALARIA RISK — No Prophylaxis Required: There is no malaria transmission in Andorra. Andorra's cool mountainous climate and temperate European environment do not support the Anopheles mosquito populations that transmit malaria. No antimalarial medication is needed for this destination.
No Risk No malaria transmission in Andorra
No Prophylaxis Antimalarial medication not required
Temperate Climate Vector mosquitoes not present
Safe Destination Among the lowest health-risk destinations globally
Physician's Note:
Andorra is one of the very few international destinations where antimalarial medication is not only unnecessary but would serve no health benefit. If you are combining your Andorra trip with travel to malaria-endemic regions, speak to your physician about prophylaxis based on your full itinerary.

Recommended Vaccines for Andorra

No travel-specific vaccines are required for Andorra. The following routine vaccines should be up to date for all international travelers. Confirm your status with your physician before travel.

ROUTINE

MMR Vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)

Measles cases are rising globally, including in Europe. Ensure you have received 2 doses of MMR vaccine. Adults born before 1957 are generally considered immune.

ROUTINE

Tdap / Tetanus Vaccine

Ensure your Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) booster is up to date — within the last 10 years. Tetanus risk is particularly relevant for outdoor/skiing activities where cuts and abrasions may occur.

SEASONAL

Influenza Vaccine & COVID-19

Annual flu shot recommended before all international travel. Flu season in Andorra typically peaks December–March, coinciding with peak ski season. Ensure COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters are current per CDC recommendations.

RECOMMENDED

Hepatitis A Vaccine

Risk in Andorra is very low due to high food hygiene standards. However, CDC recommends Hepatitis A vaccination for all international travelers who are not yet immune.

RECOMMENDED

Hepatitis B Vaccine

Spread through blood and body fluids. Recommended for travelers who may receive medical or dental care, or who may be at risk of exposure through activities or close personal contact.

ROUTINE

Polio Booster

A one-time adult booster is recommended for all international travelers. Verify your polio vaccination status before travel to any international destination.

Healthcare System in Andorra

Good News: Healthcare in Andorra meets European standards and is generally of good quality. The country's main hospital — Hospital Nostra Senyora de Meritxell — is a modern facility in Andorra la Vella capable of handling most medical emergencies. Travel health insurance is still strongly recommended, as US health insurance does not cover international care.

Hospital Nostra Senyora de Meritxell

The only hospital in Andorra, located in the capital Andorra la Vella. It offers modern facilities including emergency care, surgery, and intensive care. Staff typically speak Catalan, Spanish, and French; English is available but not universally guaranteed.

Mountain / Ski Resort Care

Grandvalira and Vallnord ski resorts have on-site first aid and rescue teams. Helicopter mountain rescue is available. For serious injuries on the slopes, helicopter evacuation to the main hospital or to hospitals in Barcelona or Toulouse may be arranged.

Payment & Insurance

US health insurance is not accepted at Andorran medical facilities. Payment is expected at time of service. Credit cards are accepted. Purchase travel health insurance that includes emergency medical and repatriation coverage, especially for winter sports activities.

Emergency Medical Evacuation:
While Andorra has competent medical care, very complex or specialized cases may require transfer to hospitals in Barcelona, Spain (approximately 3 hours by road) or Toulouse, France. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is recommended, particularly for high-risk sports activities.
No US Embassy in Andorra: The United States does not maintain an embassy in Andorra. US citizen services are handled by the US Embassy in Madrid, Spain. Register your trip via STEP at step.state.gov before departure. In emergencies: US Embassy Madrid +34-91-587-2200.

Nature & Weather Risks

Skiing & Winter Sports Injuries

Andorra's primary health risk for tourists is injury from skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports. Wear appropriate protective gear including a helmet. Purchase comprehensive sports-specific travel insurance before hitting the slopes. Ski resort pistes are well-maintained and patrolled.

Altitude Sickness

Andorra la Vella is at 1,023m; Pas de la Casa and ski areas reach 2,640m. Mild altitude sickness symptoms (headache, fatigue, nausea) can occur, particularly in travelers arriving directly from sea level. Acclimatize gradually, stay hydrated, and avoid heavy exertion on day one.

High-Altitude UV & Sunburn

UV radiation increases significantly at altitude and is intensified by reflection off snow. Apply SPF 50+ sunscreen to all exposed skin, wear UV-blocking sunglasses or goggles, and use lip balm with SPF. Severe sunburn on snowy slopes can occur very rapidly — even on cloudy days.

Cold & Hypothermia Risk

Temperatures in the mountains can drop well below freezing, particularly at night and during winter months. Dress in moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and windproof outer shells. Frostbite and hypothermia are real risks if stranded or injured on the mountain.

Mountain Road Conditions

Mountain roads in Andorra can be icy, narrow, and challenging in winter. Snow chains or winter tires may be required. The main road entry passes through mountain tunnels and switchbacks. Drive cautiously, reduce speed in adverse weather, and check road conditions before departure.

Summer Wildfire Risk

Summer months can bring drought conditions and wildfire risk to the Pyrenean region. Summer hiking trails are generally safe, but monitor local alerts. Stay on marked trails, do not light open fires, and be aware of fire risk signage posted on hiking routes.

Crime, Violence & Safety Risks

Very Safe Destination: Andorra has an exceptionally low crime rate and is consistently ranked among the safest countries in the world. Violent crime is extremely rare. The US State Department rates Andorra at Level 1 — Exercise Normal Precautions, its lowest and safest rating.

Petty Theft

While Andorra is very safe, petty theft (pickpocketing, bag snatching) can occur in crowded shopping areas and ski resort villages during peak tourist season. Exercise the same normal precautions you would in any popular tourist destination. Use hotel safes for valuables.

Traffic Safety

Traffic accidents, particularly on mountain roads in winter, are the most significant safety risk in Andorra. Drive with extreme caution on snow-covered or icy roads. Traffic laws are strictly enforced. Drink-driving laws are in effect with zero tolerance for impaired driving.

General Safety Tips

Andorra is extremely safe for solo travelers, families, and elderly visitors. Exercise basic common-sense precautions: be aware of your surroundings in busy tourist areas, do not leave valuables visible in your car, and secure your belongings at ski resorts and shopping centers.

Other Health Considerations in Andorra

Traveler's Diarrhea

Risk is very low in Andorra due to high food hygiene standards comparable to Western Europe. Tap water is safe to drink. Exercise standard food hygiene practices and wash hands regularly.

Tick-Borne Diseases

Ticks are present in forested and grassy areas of the Pyrenees during warmer months. Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are rare but possible. Use insect repellent containing DEET when hiking, wear long clothing, and perform tick checks after outdoor activities.

Air Quality

Air quality in Andorra is generally excellent due to its mountainous location. Occasional pollution from traffic in Andorra la Vella may affect those with respiratory conditions. Overall air quality is among the best in Europe.

Respiratory Infections

Cold, dry mountain air and close proximity to other skiers in lifts and lodges can facilitate transmission of respiratory infections including influenza and COVID-19, especially during peak winter season. Ensure vaccinations are current before travel.
