About Akrotiri

Akrotiri is one of two British Sovereign Base Areas on the island of Cyprus (the other is Dhekelia), retained by the United Kingdom as a military territory when Cyprus gained independence in 1960. Although technically a separate British Overseas Territory, Akrotiri has no border posts, passport control, or checkpoints separating it from the rest of Cyprus — the boundary is marked only by inconspicuous pillars, and travelers pass through freely as part of a normal Cyprus itinerary. Most of the land is open to the public, including beaches, salt lakes, and historic sites, with access restricted only to active military installations.

Because Akrotiri is visited seamlessly as part of a wider trip to Cyprus — with the same entry requirements, currency, language environment, and emergency services as the rest of the island — we have not created a separate travel guide for this territory.
